Story

Conor Heald

He shoots...

Thomas Hutchinson- a 17 year old who plays in the West Ham academy. Strong, quick all the attributes to be a clinical finisher.

Plot- Begins with Thomas been told that he's on the fringes of the first team after a terrific few games for the Under 23's. "Keep this up and you'll be just like this seasons  Marcus Rashford" The Manager of the under 23's David McGuiness tells him. Tom's shown the door and told to get a move on back to training.

The next weekend Tom is sat with the rest of the academy lads in the stands watching the Hammers take on lower league side Rotherham in the EFL cup. The ball is played up to Dimitri Payet who send through Andy Carroll just as he's about to pull the trigger. He is taken out from behind. Tom and the rest of the academy lads jump up screaming for the 'dirty northern bastard' to be sent to for an early bath. Then Tom looks in the direction of Andy who seems to be in some agony. Then to his horror Tom sees why, Andy's leg is flopping about all over the place. 'that's definitely a break' Tom says to his best mate in the academy Sam Lees.

At home the next day Tom eats his crunchy nut cornflakes while watching Sky Sports News then he hears...

"West Ham forward Andy Carroll is set to miss the rest of the season with a terrible double leg break sustained in the 2-1 win against Rotherham last night".

Tom's dad mutters something and chuckles about Andy been injured yet again.

"And without a long list of first team strikers to turn to and the transfer window already shut, Bilic may have to turn to one of his Academy strikers to fill the Bench at the weekend against Chelsea of all teams"

Toms eyes light up remembering what Dave had told him the week before.

The night before the Chelsea match Dave calls tom into his office and tells him he's in the match day 18 for tomorrow. Delighted he cant keep his huge grin off his face as he realises everything he's worked towards is coming true. Saturday arrives and Tom gets on the coach to Stamford Bridge. He immediately becomes overwhelmed with the fact he's sat with the first team squad on the way to one of the country's great stadiums. As they arrive at the stadium all the fans wait next to the players entrance hoping to get autographs. Names are been shouted by all different ages of fans "Dimitri" "Manuel" "Winston" names of all the big players are said but Tom never hears his as he walks through the door almost un noticed. He sits down in front of his shirt 'Hutchinson 45'. As the Intimidating Croatian walks into the middle of the room and reads out the line up. He finishes by saying "Hutchinson" Tom looks up at him. He's on the bench for the club he's loved all his life.

He pulls out his phone tell his mates. After he does he pulls up twitter and searches his own name.
"Tom Hutchinson? Another rubbish youth player coming through our overrated academy"

"If Tom Hutchinson comes on it shows just how bad were doing this year"

After that he puts his phone into his bag feeling slightly demoralized. He goes out to the pitch to train with the rest of the subs. He can see people in the crowd pointing at him whispering to each other and pulling the same face that mad Tom knew that both men had no idea who he was. As the players make their way back into the dressing room for the final team talks. He makes his way out of the tunnel to sit on the comfy blue seats that are surrounded by a sea of blue from the Chelsea fans.

The match kicks off, it's a feisty affair with tackles flying in from all angles. In the 22nd minute Cesc Fabregas plays a defence splitting pass to Eden Hazard who finishes into the back of the net. The home crowd erupt as Tom slumps into his seat still acting like the fan he would be if he wasn't sat in the position he was. The half time whistle blows to a large applause from the home crowd. A few boos linger from the away but most fans are too drunk to care. The team go back in to the dressing room and big Slav gives them a bollocking. Calling each player every name under the sun. The players now even more nervous of what Slaven will do if they get any worse. The second half gets underway and Tom takes his place back on the bench. Within a minute of the second half kicking off Chelsea get a second as Diego Costa puts a bullet head straight into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. The manager goes bananas shouting every swear word he knows in English and Croatian.

The clock ticks past the 80th minute mark and still West Ham trail. Then Slaven looks back at Tom flicking his finger signalling him to strip off to just his kit. Quick as a flash Tom is ready standing next to the frightening manager as he gives him his final instructions. The next thing he knows the board is up. 'Off  27 Dimitri Payet' 'ON 45 Thomas Hutchinson' West ham fans begin to boo as there star player is dragged off the pitch for a relatively unknown quantity. Tom jogs into the penalty area ready to attack the corner West Ham has. The ball is swung in and Tom leaps like a salmon connecting sweetly with the ball as he watches it nestle in the bottom corner. He runs to collect the ball to the relieved cheers from the Hammers faithful. As Chelsea kick off again Tom is buzzing but he can't quite stop and take it in as her has to keep on going. 89 Minutes pass and West Ham still need an equalizer, Tom picks up the ball and skips past the oncoming defender, he's through on goal all he has to do is put it past the rushing Courtois. A delicate chip sees the ball land comfortably behind the line as Tom wheels away in celebration rushing towards the delirious fans as he runs in front of them and points to the name on the back of the shirt.
'there will be 5 minutes of additional time'
Both teams crowds encourage them to go on and take all three points. Chelsea win a corner and throw everyone forward except on player, the goalkeeper, Tom stays on the edge of the area hoping the ball is cleared so he can pounce. It does just that and off he goes running like Usain Bolt in a 100m final he reaches the edge of the box as the West Ham crowd begin to get giddy, The keeper comes out and clatters Tom sending him flying to the grass.

The refs whistle blows Tom looks up to see the referee point to the spot. Tom leaps up and grabs the ball and puts it on the spot as the ref gives the keeper a yellow card. Tom gets ready to take looking straight at the keeper remembering everything all his coaches had taught him through the years. The ref blows his whistle and Tom begins his run up he hits the ball with power and slams it into the back of the net. He runs quickly over to the West ham fans and jumps over the electronic advertising board to celebrate with the fans. His teammates jump all over him this added to the fans causes him to fall over.
Chelsea kick off but the fulltime whistle blows Players celebrate almost like a cup final as the Ref walks over to Tom and passes him the match ball as the rest of the players come over and parade him over to the Amazed fans. They knew who he was now.
